Wildlife Mississippi Magazine

Winter/Spring 2001

President's Message

Peyton SelfIf wildlife habitat is to be developed in Mississippi, landowners must be significantly involved since over 80% of the land in Mississippi is privately owned. We have been good stewards of the land. Many are currently involved in fish and wildlife protection, restoration and enhancement. However, we can do much more. Mississippians have the resources and ability to do the job.

In many parts of America, fish, wildlife and PEOPLE'S needs were not sufficiently addressed, and as a result, agencies and organizations have encouraged programs that have not always been compatible with desired goals of local people who share a genuine concern for the fish and wildlife resources of our state.

Wildlife Mississippi is a private, non-profit initiative begun by leaders in business, forestry and agriculture in Mississippi. We're off and running, and this is only the beginning. We are a Mississippi organization geared toward projects and results. As you can see, we will remain lean and local...all dollars stay here...all activities and resources will be directed to the 82 counties of Mississippi.

Only a few years old, Wildlife Mississippi is well underway with the MISSISSIPPI WATERFOWL PROGRAM. This includes projects such as working to extend the duck season, and, of course, our extensive waterfowl habitat and wood duck nest box programs. The Foundation is also working on improving water quality, restoring wetlands, developing backyard wildlife, providing decoy deer and working to develop and maintain incentives for landowners to improve habitat.

No area has a greater potential for fish and wildlife than Mississippi. Let's show America what our great state can do. The opportunities are endless, but we can reach our real potential only through participation of landowners and leaders like yourself. Your grandchildren will be proud to recall that you took a role in this great initiative.
