CONSERVATION POLICY OVERVIEW

Wildlife Mississippi works daily with elected officials and agencies to promote conservation policies that are innovative and cost-effective. Our work benefits both public and private lands. We believe that maintaining a healthy environment makes good economic sense for Mississippi and the nation.

Among our most important policy initiatives are:

  • Supporting provisions of the federal Farm Bill that promote the conservation of bottomland hardwood forests, wetlands, longleaf pine forests, native prairies and other habitats on private lands.
  • Supporting the creation and expansion of public lands, especially National Wildlife Refuges, as well as new interpretative facilities.
  • Establishment of a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help guide habitat restoration, watershed planning and water quality improvements in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Read or download our Mississippi Gulf Coast Strategic Plan.
  • Working to develop tax incentives for the recovery of threatened and endangered species on private lands as well as tax policies that encourage the use of conservation easements on private lands.
  • Supporting the Mississippi legislature’s Sportsmen’s Caucus, the largest of its kind in the nation.
